MOHALI: New Zealand defeated Pakistan by 22 runs. With their third win in the World T20 tournament, New Zealand progressed to them semi-final.
Winning the toss New Zealand opted to bat first. Approving the captain’s decision, openers Guptill and Williamson batted extremely well. The openers added 72 runs in 7.2 overs, before Williamson fell victim to Mohammad Irfan. Williamson scored 17 of 21 deliveries with the help of a single boundary.
Guptil scored a quick-fired 80 from 48 balls. His innings included ten boundaries and three maximums. In the final overs, Taylor too added some quick runs to take the New Zealand score to 180. He smashed two boundaries and a six in his 23-balls 36.
For Pakistan, Sami stood outstanding with his spell reading 4-0-23-2 while three of the other bowlers conceded more than 10 runs per over. Shahid Afridi picked two wickets while Irfan claimed one.
Chasing the target of 181, Pakistan openers gave a very good beginning. When Sharjeel Khan was caught by Guptill in an Milne delivery, Pakistan were at 65 for one in 5.3 overs. Sharjeel Khan scored 48 of 25 balls with nine boundaries and a maximum. But once he departed, the New Zealand came back to the track picking wickets in right intervals.
Shehzad scored 30 and Umar Akmal scored 24. Shahid Afridi played some good shots in his 9-ball-19. But once Anderson sent him back to the pavilion with a stunning catch on Sodhi delivery, Pakistan’s hopes too came to an end. Finally they were restricted at 158 for the loss of five wickets. With this second loss, Pakistan is on the threshold of exit. For New Zealand, Santner and Milne claimed two wickets each while Sodhi bagged one.
